Well, I’m back from holiday and straight back into the grind. Here are some interesting/cool stuff that I have seen over the last few weeks:
DATA – If you saw the film “Moneyball” (or read the book), then you will understand the value of data in sports. This article / video (4 minutes long) from Wired looks at the use of data mapping in basketball. It’s interesting stuff.
PROTEIN – This review on high protein diets for athletes makes interesting reading.
GENES! – Struggling to lose weight? This article (sadly fro the Daily Mail) suggests that there might be a genetic influence involved.
LOW BACK PAIN – Obviously, anything to do with lower back pain tends to get me interested. Chris Beardsley from Strength and Conditioning Research had this interview with a physical therapist regarding LBP.
TAPER! – What happens when we reduce our exercise intensity and/or volume in preparation for a competition? Well, these cyclists saw an improvement in testosterone:cortisol ratio, as well as improvements in mood.
NUTRITION + FACTS – 20 Nutrition Facts That Should Be Common Sense from authoritynutrition. Amen.
MORE GENETICS – Is there a gene which allows you to live for more than 110 years? (No.)

READING – having being on holiday, I read 3 books. The Sports Gene: Talent, Practice and the Truth About Success is quite simply excellent. If you’re interested in the genetics of sporting performance, you should definitely check it out. The Epigenetics Revolution: How Modern Biology is Rewriting Our Understanding of Genetics, Disease and Inheritance was good and enjoyable, if not a little bit deep sometimes. Did you know that identical twins get less and less identical the more they age? Finally, Ready to Run gave a good insight into why we get injured running, and how to prevent it.
ATHLETICS WEEKLY – I also had an article accepted for AW, so check out next Thursday’s magazine!
